Publishing a book can be overwhelming. We're here to guide you through the process, handle the technical pieces, and make sure you know exactly what's happening along the way.
How It Works
The process, step by step
- 1
Let's talk about your book
We start with you.
You'll complete a short publishing questionnaire telling us about your book, where you are in the process, what you hope to accomplish, and where you need help.
We'll talk about your manuscript, your audience, your vision for the book, the services you need, your publishing and distribution goals, and your desired timeline.
From youYour manuscript or current draft, basic information about your book, and your goals.
From usA recommended publishing plan based on your project.
- 2
We build your publishing plan
Not every author needs the same thing.
Some authors arrive with a polished manuscript and completed cover, while others need help with everything. Together, we'll determine exactly what A Million Dreams Publishing will handle.
Services may include editing, proofreading, interior formatting, cover design, print preparation, publishing setup, distribution, launch planning, and marketing support.
Once the scope, timeline, responsibilities, and publishing terms are agreed upon, we'll begin.
From youApproval of your publishing plan and publishing agreement.
From usA clear scope of work, timeline, and next steps.
- 3
Manuscript preparation
Before we design the book, we make sure the words are ready.
If you have a fully edited, ready-to-go manuscript, we can skip this phase.
Depending on your project, this phase may include editing, revisions, proofreading, manuscript cleanup, or preparation of a previously published work for a new edition.
You'll have opportunities to review changes and make decisions throughout the process.
From youYour manuscript, feedback, revisions, and final approval.
From usA finished manuscript ready to become a book.
- 4
Book design
Your book starts to look like a book.
This may include interior page design, typography, chapter and section styling, paperback and hardcover formatting, journal/workbook layouts, ebook formatting, cover design, and spine and back-cover design.
You'll review the design before anything is published.
From youDesign preferences, artwork/photos when applicable, and feedback.
From usProfessional, publication-ready interior and cover files.
- 5
Your book's publishing identity
Every book needs more than a manuscript and a cover.
A Million Dreams Publishing prepares the information necessary to identify, position, sell, and distribute your book.
This includes ISBN assignment, publisher/imprint information, copyright-page information, book description, author information, categories, keywords, pricing, publication information, and distribution metadata.
For books published by A Million Dreams Publishing, the company serves as the publisher and provides the appropriate ISBN for each edition/format.
From youFinal book information and approval of key publishing decisions.
From usA complete publishing-ready book record.
- 6
Proofing your book
We don't want the first time you see your finished book to be after someone buys it.
Before final publication, we'll review the digital files and, when appropriate, order a physical proof.
We check the cover and spine, interior layout, margins and bleed, images, typography, page order, color and print quality, ISBN/barcode, and overall appearance.
If something needs fixing, we fix it before final approval.
From youYour final review and approval.
From usA quality-controlled book ready for release.
- 7
Publication & distribution
Once the book is approved, it's time to make it available to readers.
A Million Dreams Publishing uses professional publishing and distribution platforms based on the needs of each book.
Amazon KDP: used for direct publication and print-on-demand availability through Amazon. Each time an order is placed, KDP prints and ships. Other than a few dollars for a sample book to approve, there are no upfront costs.
IngramSpark: used for broader wholesale distribution, making your book available for ordering through bookstores, libraries, schools, online retailers, and other markets. Physical bookstores independently decide which titles to stock, and strong sales, reader demand, professional presentation, and marketing can increase opportunities for retail placement.
Author editions (coming soon): higher-quality author editions printed overseas, stored in our warehouse, and sold directly by the author at events and from the publisher's and author's websites.
From youFinal authorization to publish.
From usA published book available through the agreed sales and distribution channels.
- 8
Launching your book
A published book still needs readers.
If launch and marketing services are part of your publishing plan, we'll build a strategy around your book, your audience, and your goals.
This may include launch planning, Amazon listing optimization, social media content, email marketing, promotional graphics, advance copies, reviews, events, an author website/book page, and ongoing marketing strategy.
From youYour participation, voice, audience, and promotional materials where applicable.
From usThe launch and marketing support included in your publishing plan.
- 9
After publication
Publication isn't necessarily the end of our relationship.
Depending on our agreement, A Million Dreams Publishing may continue to manage distribution, publishing records, royalties, updates, new editions, additional formats, and marketing support.
Authors receive royalty reporting and payment according to the terms of their individual publishing agreement. In some cases, royalties are paid by IngramSpark and Amazon KDP directly to author and publisher — each of us is paid separately and directly.
And when you're ready to write the next one? We'll know exactly where to start.
From youIdeas for what's next.
From usOngoing support for your book — and the next one.
